Guilty (2020) Movie Review
Did he or did he not?
Coming right off the heels of the #metoo campaign. Kiara Advani stars as Nanki who's boyfriend stands accused of rape.
The film circles around the question whether the aforementioned rape actually occurred or not and that's where there the major chunk of run-time happens beating around the bush. Dir. Ruchi Nairan tries to add layers of compelling psychological innuendos that depict Nanki's backstory, but it all adds up-to cannon fodder. At times, the constant references to pop-culture are somewhat baffling and unnecessary.
Akansha Kapoor is the victim who sends out a tweet with the tag 'metoo' stating that she's been raped by Gurfateh's character 'VJ'. Plenty of one-dimensional characters such a lawyer, a paternal politician and a worried mother can't do much to save this sinking boat of a movie.
A completely off-balanced climax which is preceded by muddy plotline and little to no-character development, the only redeemable part could be the acting of its main cast.
Thematically, it peeked into concepts such as concept, nepotism, being privileged, paternal society and at times subtle PTSD.
